Christantus Uche Ignites Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS ought to be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were outmatched against a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
