Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
